Boogeyman - Chapter 6

Chapter 6

(A/N: So I have just re-read the story and I saw grammar errors and other stupid errors (stupid on my part) like a light working in one room one second and then there being no lights and a flashlight is needed. I've seen the mistakes and taken them into account and hopefully things'll be a lot more...accurate...through the rest!)

(2nd A/N: I have mentioned so much about what Cody is doing after he sells the house. Chapters 1 & 3 had different ideas entirely. So from this point on, there will only be one plan for after. I have tamed the plot bunnies and mapped it all out so I'll know! Sorry about the mix ups! From here on, trust the story!)

His eyes were heavy with sleep but he refused to let them close. The sandman was playing tricks on him, sprinkling even more sand onto his eyelids, laughing as they sank lower and lower. Cody quickly rubbed his eyes and cleared his throat, glancing through the windshield at the road ahead. He was spaced out, nothing but fuzz filling his brain. It was as if a white noise was fuzzing through his thoughts.

He could feel Chin's eyes on him every few minutes and he was sure that the detective had called his name several times but he could just hear static. Eight years away from this place and trouble started not even a whole day back.

The truck slowly made it's way through the spritzing rain to a smaller neighborhood which housed Chin's residence.

"I'll get you settled in the guest room." Chin told him. He had no idea if the younger male could hear him. Cody's pupils seemed to be blown wide and he was giving no attention to anything around him.

Cody rolled his window down and let the mist of the evening rain spatter his face. It was cooling after the night's intense events. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His head was pounding.

"Do you have any aspirin at your place?" he asked Chin.

"Yeah. We'll get it first thing. I live just right up the street here." The driver told him.

They were quiet as they pulled into the driveway behind an impressive motorcycle. Cody kept his eyes on the vehicle as he rolled his window up and jumped out, slamming the door shut unconsciously.

"Nice ride. Not the same one as I remember you having." he teased.

Chin chuckled. He could see a little humor coming out of the college student. It was a good thing. He just hoped it lasted enough to get through the next few days to when his life would go back to whatever normalcy he had had it.

"The old one finally blew. I had to get a new one. She's a beauty alright." he said.

Cody followed him up the steps of the house.

"I still don't get why people call things 'she'. Makes no sense." he mumbled.

Chin hid a laugh and unlocked the door, throwing his keys on the small table by the door.

"The guest room is upstairs." he mentioned. Cody glanced around. It was a modest place with many memories shown through photos and other knick knacks. Cody toed off his shoes and dropped his bag, looking at a table of framed pictures that rested against the back of a couch in the living room. One was of Chin and Malia smiling. They seemed happy.

"I heard about Malia in L.A. I'm sorry Chin. I would have called but..." he tailed off.

Chin smiled sadly and picked up the picture.

"She would have liked you." was all he said, setting the picture down slowly and heading towards the kitchen.

"I have some aspirin here. Why don't you take some and then we'll get situated."

Cody trotted into the bright yellow kitchen. He had a feeling that the color had been Malia's idea. She liked bright colorful things.

Chin reached into the cabinet above the sink and pulled out a bottle, shaking out two pills and offering them to Cody. Cody accepted them and a glass of water. Chin laughed at the face he pulled as he swallowed the pills.

"Nasty taste on the back of your throat? Yeah I hate that too." he said.

After his laughter stopped, the two just stood in the kitchen, almost as if someone had introduced them, expecting them to get along and just left, leaving two awkward individuals to find something to do.

"We're gonna figure this out Cody. You aren't pushing me out this time." Chin said, depositing the cup in the sink and drying his hands on a hand towel. Cody wouldn't look at him.

They left the kitchen. Cody grabbed his bag and followed Cody up the stairs to the second floor. There were less doors in Chin's upper floor than Cody's old home. There was the master bedroom, the guest room, and a bathroom. All the doors were open but it didn't stop Cody's heart from racing. He paused at the top of the stairs. His brain was telling him to turn and run. His hand clenched tighter on the railing.

When Chin realized that Cody wasn't following him, he turned around.

"You okay?" he asked.

Cody seemed to snap out of his thoughts and nodded, following him to the guest room.

It was a light green in color with a bed, dresser, desk, and TV. Cody tried to see it as a bright room. His eyes were just shaded in horror though.

Chin stood by the door watching Cody walk around the room, glancing around. Cody looked his way and paused.

"Can you either come in the room or leave? Your silhouette in the door isn't a nice image right now." he asked, his voice shaky.

Chin paused himself and immediately walked into the room, sitting on the end of the bed.

"I know you already told us what happened at the house. But I have to ask, you didn't want my help. What changed?" he asked hesitantly.

The last thing he wanted to do was push Cody away again. But the question was nagging the back of his head like an angry house guest that wouldn't go away.

Cody chuckled lightly.

"I had a talk with your friend Danny. He may be a haole but he's pretty smart." he said. He glanced out the window and then sat next to Chin on the bed.

"He can be pretty insightful. Told me I basically needed to pull my head out of the dark and accept help." he mentioned, almost in a wistful tone.

Chin smiled and patted his young friend's shoulder.

"Why don't you get some sleep. We'll talk in the morning. The bathroom is down the hall and my room is in the corner if you need me." he consoled.

Cody's mouth changed to a thin line and he nodded.

H50

Cody jerked awake at the harsh ringing of his cell phone. He opened his eyes, blinking harshly in the bright light of the phone. He sat up in the bed, rubbing his eyes furiously. Rain pounded against the window and lightning filled the room through the curtains. Thunder rumbled as the Hawaiian storm passed over.

The phone went silent and the bedroom went dark. The house was still, the only noise coming from the storm. His eyes were still heavy with sleep and glancing at the clock, he groaned at the 2:13am time.

Sliding back down in the warm sheets, he faced away from the window and closed his eyes, letting out a deep sigh.

But the phone rang again. The screen light up once more causing Cody to grimace and shield his eyes. He reached over and unplugged the object and pressed talk, pressing it to the ear crushed to his pillow.

"Hello?" he said.

There were no words spoken but the deep breaths were a sign that someone was on the other line.

"Hello? Jeff, I swear if you're butt dialing me again..." Jeff Collins, a friend of his in LA had the tendency to forget to lock his phone when he put it in his back pocket.

"Hello Cody." it was a voice that to Cody seemed full of evil. It was slightly raspy but he didn't recognize it.

"Ummm, hello. Who is this?" he asked, sitting up in the bed again and scratching his shirt covered chest.

"We didn't get to formally meet tonight. It was rude of you to run off like that."

Cody's eyes grew. He was immediately awake and on full alert. He threw the covers off and slid off the bed and practically scurried to the window. He silently pulled the curtain away slightly and glanced out in the dark rain. Rivulets of rain ran down the window, obscuring his view. Besides that, there didn't seem to be any movement outside.

"Who are you? What do you want?" he demanded, his voice rising.

"I just want to know how you got away all those years ago. You weren't supposed to get away. Besides, don't you want to know how I killed your mother?" the voice asked, the word 'mother' taking on a sinister side.

Cody stumbled back from the window, moving backwards until he hit the open door frame to the hallway. He had insisted Chin leave it open.

"No!" he gasped, sliding down the door frame. He fisted his hair with his free hand.

"Don't you want to know why?"

Cody ignored the tears beginning to pour down his face.

"Leave me alone!" he shouted.
